Deep Sky Debuts DAC Partnership with Ireland’s NEG8 Carbon

MONTRÉAL and WATERFORD, IRELAND (February 7, 2024)Deep Sky, a Montreal-based gigaton-scale carbon removal project developer, and NEG8 Carbon, the leading Irish-based Direct Air Capture company, have partnered to install carbon removal technology in Canada. As part of its partnership with Deep Sky, NEG8 Carbon will deliver and install a DAC Air Processing Unit (APU) with the capacity to remove more than 300 tonnes of CO2 annually.

As the world's first gigaton-scale carbon removal company, Deep Sky will operate NEG8 Carbon’s DAC system as part of its Deep Sky Labs research facility. The system will be installed in Quebec in 2025, leveraging the region's vast renewable hydroelectric energy reserves.

NEG8 Carbon is a leader in the fight against carbon emissions. Utilizing unique modular solid sorbent carbon capture technology, its highly scalable and highly energy-efficient process has the potential to capture millions of tonnes of CO2 more efficiently and effectively than competitors. NEG8 Carbon has ambitions to become a global leader in DAC technology and make a significant impact in the fight against climate change, with a goal of eliminating 100 million tonnes of CO2 each year by 2050.

Once in operation, the partners will monitor the performance of the DAC unit at Deep Sky’s Labs facility. Data will be collected on the performance of the unit in terms of carbon dioxide removal (CDR), energy consumption, and more. Together, the partners aim to validate the technology for commercial deployment in Canada as part of Deep Sky's mission to develop Canada into a world-leading hub for carbon removal.

“We search the world for carbon removal innovators, and NEG8 Carbon is just that – Ireland’s preeminent DAC company,” said Damien Steel, Deep Sky CEO. “Scalability and high energy efficiency are two prime factors in defining partners, and NEG8 brings both to the table. Together, we’re taking a global step towards a greener future.”

“NEG8 Carbon welcomes our partnership with Deep Sky as an exciting milestone on our mission to become the global leader in DAC technology,” said Ray Naughton, NEG8 Carbon Managing Director. “The opportunity to test our system in an optimal environment presents a clear roadmap for the deployment of our first pilot project. The manufacturing of our 300 tonne system is underway with our Irish-based partner and subsequent testing will take place at our state-of-the-art facility in southern Ireland. We are thrilled to be part of this ground-breaking project, paving the way for a greener, cleaner future for all.”

Together, Deep Sky and NEG8 Carbon are committed to developing and deploying cutting-edge carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies. High-quality CDR is essential for achieving net zero emissions goals and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Powered by renewable energy, Deep Sky's facilities are strategically located in Québec, a region with an abundance of hydroelectric power, immense wind power potential, and a vast territory with the rich geological makeup required for carbon removal.
