Deep Sky and Carbon Atlantis to Deploy Direct Air Capture (DAC) in Canada

MONTRÉAL and MUNICH (December 14, 2023)Deep Sky, a Montreal-based gigaton-scale carbon removal project developer, and Carbon Atlantis, a Munich-based DAC company, have partnered to deploy carbon removal technology in Canada. Carbon Atlantis will deliver and install a DAC unit to be operated at Deep Sky’s pilot facility in Quebec in 2025. The unit will have the capacity to remove 260 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

Carbon Atlantis’ patented electrolyzer for acid/base production enables low-cost, scalable Direct Air Capture. By circulating a liquid solvent through the system, the CO2 is captured and separated using only electricity. It will then be compressed and liquified by Deep Sky for transport and storage.

Once in operation, the partners will monitor the performance of the DAC unit at Deep Sky’s Labs facility. Data will be collected on the performance of the unit in terms of carbon dioxide removal (CDR), energy consumption, and more. Together, the partners aim to validate the technology for commercial deployment in Canada as part of Deep Sky's mission to develop Canada into a world-leading hub for carbon removal.

“We search the world for innovative, energy efficient and scalable DAC technologies, and the radical scale-up potential from Carbon Atlantis fits the bill,” said Damien Steel, Deep Sky CEO. “We’re pleased to add Carbon Atlantis to our Labs test facility in Canada, collectively capture hundreds of tonnes of CO2, and work towards gigaton-scale carbon removal for our commercial customers.”

“Acids and bases are the building blocks for a wide range of carbon removal applications, including electrochemical Direct Air Capture,” said Malte Feucht, Carbon Atlantis CEO. “We’re thrilled that Deep Sky recognizes our breakthrough electrolyzer technology for Direct Air Capture. We look forward to working together and share a maniacal urgency to act upon this massive challenge humanity is facing.”

Together, Deep Sky and Carbon Atlantis are committed to developing and deploying cutting-edge carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies. High quality CDR is essential for achieving net zero emissions goals and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Powered by renewable energy, Deep Sky's facilities are strategically located in Quebec, a region with an abundance of hydroelectric power, immense wind power potential and a vast territory with the rich geological makeup required for carbon capture.

About Carbon Atlantis

Based in Munich, Carbon Atlantis develops a first-of-a-kind, low-cost electrolyzer for Direct Air Capture (DAC) to remove CO2 from the air. With partners, it utilizes or permanently stores the CO2. You can reduce your carbon footprint by buying high-quality, permanent carbon removals from Carbon Atlantis as a company or individual. It has already been selected as a supplier of carbon removal for Frontier's third round of carbon removal pre-purchases. For more information, visit
